By 4Squares Residential Group in Partnership with Judi 411 Sip, Sip, Hooray! Here at 4Squares, we are all about the road less traveled. While many folks head to apple orchards (and we do have some recs for those), this year we're opting for another fruity fall sensation: wine. Believe it or not, Massachusetts is a haven for wine enthusiasts, boasting remarkable vineyards and wineries. If you're on the hunt for great wine and stunning landscapes, these destinations should be at the top of your list: Westport Rivers Vineyard and Winery 417 Hixbridge Road, Westport, MA (pictured above) Nestled amidst the picturesque farmland of the South Coast, Westport Rivers Vineyard and Winery offers an excellent selection of sparkling wines that will leave your taste buds tingling with delight. Take a leisurely stroll through the vineyard and enjoy the serene atmosphere while sipping their signature top-notch bubbly while kicking back in one of the Adirondack chairs on the expansive lawn. Spirit away mid-week for tastings, which are now back on the menu post-COVID between 11 am to 4:45 pm Monday through Saturday. Reservations are required for parties of more than 10 people. Photos, left to right: Nashoba flights, Nashoba bottled, and 1634 Mead. Nashoba Valley Winery 100 Wattaquadock Hill Rd, Bolton, MA For those who prefer a variety of wines, Nashoba Valley Winery is the place to be. With a diverse range of reds and whites, this winery has something for everyone. Enjoy traditional varietals such as Malbec, Chardonnay, or Cabernet Sauvignon, or tantalize your taste buds with some non-traditional Amora Blackberry Port Style Wine, Cherry wine, or Foggy Bog, a cranberry-apple dessert style aperitif. Take in the foliage and enjoy the company of fellow wine enthusiasts during your visit. Tours and tastings can be booked up to 21 days in advance, including dining at the Vintner's Knoll, the vineyard's on-site restaurant. Truro Vineyard 11 Shore Road, North Truro, MA The 4Squares Team is a big fan of the Cape off-season, and the Truro Vineyard is a must-see-and-sip as far as we're concerned. Sample their Lighthouse Wine Series — composed of Cranberry Red, Diamond White, Cape Blush, and Vignoles wines — all available in their signature lighthouse-shaped bottles while taking in the soothing sights of the nearby ocean. It's the perfect place to unwind and indulge in these regional flavors. For those seeking more potent potables, check out Truro’s South Hollow Spirits selection of whiskey, gin, rum, and amaro, all produced in stand-alone, small batches using local ingredients, right down to the copper barrels they’re aged in. Photos from top left: Jarl and his mead, at the nearby Somerville Winter Farmer's Market, casks at Truro, and an arbor and firepit at Westport. 1634 Meadery 3 Short Street, Ipswich, MA Now for something completely different: Mead! With its luscious honey-infused flavors, Mead delights the palate with a rich and indulgent sweetness that is truly irresistible, and the 1634 Meadery is where it's at. Explore the world of honey-infused beverages and discover a whole new realm of flavors, which run the gamut from Puritan Pride (“Nothing fancy here!”) to Devil’s Footprint (“You’ve been warned!”). Other notable potables include Mother Clucker (“Did someone say ‘tart’?”) and Minuteman, an homage to our Revolutionary roots. • Meet Me in Medford | Celia Lee, Local Artist

Celia Lee of the Arts Collaborative Medford From the murals on buildings across town to the meditative labyrinth on Freedom Way and the beautiful Condon Shell on the Mystic River, it’s clear that Medford is a city that celebrates creativity. Celia Lee of the Arts Collaborative Medford is one of the people bringing artists together and building community. We spent some time with Celia to learn more about the Arts Collaborative and what they have in store for the community. We always start with the question: If you're originally from Medford, tell us where you grew up. And if you grew up elsewhere, what brought you to our fair city? I’m originally from Hawaii, and I came to Massachusetts to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and spent many years living in Cambridge and Somerville. When it came time to buy a house, we had friends who lived in West Medford, where there were houses with larger yards, different than what most people see off of Interstate 93. What struck me about the area is that there's green space in Medford. People tend to think of it like Somerville, where there’s little green space. Medford has a river running through the city. After years of renting in Cambridge and Somerville, having a bit of green was a welcome change, and we’ve been living here since 1998. What do you enjoy most about your neighborhood? Well, in addition to the greenspace, I love the walkability. I walk my dogs along the river by Duggar Park, and I like that as someone who works in Boston, I’m a short walk to the West Medford Commuter Rail station. Maybe it’s because we moved here and quickly started a family, but we’ve also found a solid community in our neighborhood, as well as in the different preschools and, of course, through the Medford Family Network. You’re also a community builder yourself. Tell us about your role within the arts community in Medford. I volunteer with CACHE, the Coalition for Arts, Culture, and a Healthy Economy, which sponsors the annual Circle the Square event. I’m also involved in two arts organizations in Medford. The first is Arts Medford, which some may remember as the Medford Arts Center. We changed the name recently to avoid confusion with the Medford Arts Council, which provides grant funding for arts and cultural events in Medford. Arts Medford’s focus is supporting artists through coordinating gallery shows, events, and workshops. Mystic Makerspace is also a project of ArtsMedford, and we currently host workshops out of the Medford Library. But we hope to go back to workshops at other locations like the West Medford Community Center and Senior Center again. The Makerspace programs range from knitting and arts and crafts to 3D printing; We focus on ages 16+ so as to not compete with the Library's programming for children and teens. The other organization I am a part of is Arts Collaborative Medford, a new non-profit organization created members by CACHE, ArtsMedford, and the Medford Arts Council. Our goal is to create a welcoming and inclusive space for artists of all levels to come together and share their creativity. We’ll be opening a new art center on Mystic Avenue, which will have studios, event space, and classrooms available for artists and organizations to rent. The center will have about 12 studios of different sizes. Artists can apply for studio spaces, and we hope to build a diverse and vibrant community of artists through those rentals. We’ll also have event space and classroom space that can be rented by both nonprofits and for-profit organizations. Arts Collaborative Medford will also have a gallery space for displaying artwork. We’re still in the final stages of getting the space approved for occupancy and hope to open the doors in November. In the meantime, you can drive by and see the amazing mural that graces the front of the building at 162 Mystic Avenue! That is exciting news! When you aren’t making art or creating a community for artists, what are your favorite spots around the city? The Brooks Estate is such a hidden gem we learned about through neighbors, and I’m surprised by how many people you meet in Medford who don’t know about it. I also love walking along the Mystic River by Duggar Park and watching people play pickleball. It’s definitely busier on the weekends, but there's a group playing even on some weekday mornings if you go around 10 or 11. Finally, I’d say the West Medford Community Center is another favorite spot. They offer a lot of great programming for kids and adults. When the library was closed for renovation, we hosted Makerspace events there, and we’re getting ready to start doing workshops and events there again. If your best friend told you they were considering a move to Medford, what would you tell them? I’d tell them to do it for all the reasons I mentioned — greenspace, walkability, community, and the arts! The schools here are good too, especially having a vocational school. Medford has been really great place of community for my family and me — parents, fellow dog owners, and the whole arts community. It’s really been something to treasure. If you’d like to learn more about Arts Collaborative Medford — upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and when you can stop into the new Arts Center on Mystic Avenue — visit their website and subscribe to their email list! • Local Lighthouses | Fab4 September

By 4Squares Residential Group in Partnership with Judi 411 Lighthouse Extravaganza Ahoy there, seafarers and landlubbers alike! School may be back in session, but a little bit of summer is still left to squeeze out! If you want to add a touch of maritime magic to your life before pumpkin season is upon us, look no further than these four delightful beacons of light. Nauset Lighthouse - 120 Nauset Light Beach Rd, Eastham, MA Nestled along the picturesque shoreline of Eastham, the Nauset Lighthouse on Cape Cod has a rich history, with several changes and relocations. Originally known as The Three Sisters, it consisted of three lights on 15-foot brick towers in 1838. Coastal erosion led to multiple rebuilds and moves. In 1892, wooden lighthouses replaced the brick towers, and in 1911, the lights were moved again due to the retreating shoreline. The current Nauset Lighthouse, made of cast iron with a brick lining, was built in 1877 and moved to Eastham from Chatham in 1923. The lighthouse saw various modifications throughout the years, including a rotating Fresnel lens and, later, two rotating aero beacons. In 1996, it was moved approximately 300 feet to a new site across the road to protect it from the eroding cliff edge. Despite all these changes and relocations, the Nauset Lighthouse has been crucial in guiding mariners along the treacherous Cape Cod coastline for many years. The lighthouse is now expected to remain safe in its current location for another 30 years. Photo Credit: Borden Flats Light House, in Fall River, MA. Book an overnight stay! Nubble Lighthouse - Sohier Park Rd, York, ME The tail end of tourist season presents the perfect opportunity for a road trip northbound to the charming town of York, where you'll find the picture-perfect Nubble Lighthouse perched on its own rocky island. In 1874 President Rutherford B. Hayes appropriated the sum of $15,000 to build a lighthouse on this "Nub" of land, and construction was completed in July 1879 on what was known then as the Knubble Lighthouse with a 4th order light began to protect our men and women on the sea. The men and women serving in the Lighthouse Service were the first guardians who provided great care for the light and its surrounding buildings. Today, this treasure is part of the National Register of Historic Places. While you can't reach the lighthouse, you can get close and soak in the salty breeze and late summer sunshine. And remember to check out the adorable gift shop where you can find trinkets and sea-worthy souvenirs to take home! Photo Credit: From upper left, Nauset sketches, Nauset in fall, Nauset interior and Nubble Light House in York, ME. Boston Light - Plymouth, MA Our lighthouse list would only be complete with mention of the granddaddy of all American lighthouses, the legendary Boston Light. A quaint lighthouse set on Little Brewster Island touted as the oldest continually operating lighthouse in America, this lighthouse has seen it all, from the Boston Tea Party to the Red Sox winning the World Series. Boston Light's other claim to fame? Its keeper, Sally Snowman, is the first female keeper in Boston Light's history. While there is no public access to Boston Light due to ongoing maintenance, there are tours from the Boston Harbor Islands Welcome Center on the Rose Kennedy Greenway (across from the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel and next to the Greenway Carousel). Borden Flats - Fall River, MA If you've ever harbored the fantasy (pun intended!) of staying at a lighthouse yourself, then head down to the South Coast to the Borden Flats Lighthouse (BFL) in Fall River! Yes, it's true. Borden Flats, situated on the Taunton River leading out to Mount Hope Bay, is only one of two lighthouses in the WORLD available for an overnight stay as an honorary lighthouse keeper. Hop aboard the ferry to the lighthouse from the Borden Lights Pier and head over to the cozy quarters for a night you won't soon forget. And buoy, oh buoy (sorry, the puns are irresistible!), is this lighthouse popular! The BFL is booked for the remainder of 2023, and 2024 is nearly sold out. So if you're looking to fulfill your maritime dreams, book now, or you'll only be looking at the BFL from the shoreline.
