Local Libations an Uber Ride from Medford
"March comes in like a lion, out like a lamb," as the saying goes, and for parents in quarantine, the adage takes on a whole new meaning. If COVID Cabin-Fever hasn't hit your household yet, March is the time it will, and the cries of "I'm bored!" will reach a fever pitch. (The kids are probably bored too!) The 4 Squares Solution? Hop in an Uber to one of the local breweries, which can feel like a week's vacation in Parent Time!
The Fermentation District in Everett, MA
Nestled off of Revere Beach Parkway and Santilli Highway, you may already know this area by its iconic neighbor, Teddie Peanut Butter Factory, or as "that area across from Big Target." If it's new to you, now you have Mass-Speak directions if you're the designated driver for the evening.
Night Shift Brewing (87 Santilli Hwy, Everett, MA 02149 (617) 294-4233 info@nightshiftbrewing.com)
Started as a nocturnal hobby of a trio of friends in Somerville, MA, Night Shift Brewing now serves as the Fermentation District's flagship spot. While Night Shift beers are found in many local liquor stores, a trip to their home base for a cold one and grubbings from the food truck of the day make for a fun evening out.
COVID guidelines, including hours of operation for Indoor and Patio Reservations and Curbside & Pickup To-Go, are updated daily on the Visit Us page.
4 Squares Pick: Raise a toast in honor of Women's History Month with the hoppy Strong Female Lead brew or one of the Hard Seltzers on tap.
Bone Up Brewing Company (38 Norman Street, Everett, MA 02149 (781) 691-9092, info@boneup.beer)
If you miss international travel, then the beer garden at Bone Up Beer will satisfy both your wanderlust and your palate. Founded by husband and wife team Jared and Liz Kiraly, Bone Up marries Belgian farmhouse brewing techniques and American styles and local ingredients. The biggest challenge will be what to choose: selections run far and deep and are grouped by experiences like "Band Beers," "Custom and Wedding Beers," and some other colorful categories. Full and half-pour options are available as well as beer flights and lots of food options for pairings.
Bone Up is open Mon-Thu 3-8 pm, Fri-Sun 12-8 pm. All seating is outdoors and on a first-come, first-serve basis, and the full list of COVID guidelines are available on their website. Beer to go option is also available.
4 Squares Pick: Okay, the decision was difficult, and we spent an extraordinary amount of time reading the story behind the story of dozens of beers. The ones we're most intrigued by? No Puns, Just Fun (IPA); Funky Life (Wild Ale); and ... Sandwiches! (chocolate milk stout).
Short Path Distillery (71 Kelvin Street, Unit 2, Everett, MA 02149 (617) 830-7954, info@shortpathdistillery.com)
Potent potables are the trademark of Short Path Distillery, where you can enjoy signature cocktails made with Short Path spirits such as gin, whiskey, rum, and ouzo. Seating is exclusively under the covered outdoor Pitcher Patio, complete with heat lamps. Food options include an array of pizzas (some by the slice) and some simple salad options.
Fun fact: The three founders chose the name "Short Path Distillery" to honor "Short path distillation," a technical, scientific term used to describe the type of distilling done in a pot still. Learn more about Short Path, including COVID guidelines and reservation details here.
