Where Big Flavor, Small Shops, and Sidewalk Strolls Reign Supreme
Here at 4Squares, we love the magic of a town that feels like home—even if you’re only visiting for the day. Whether we’re sipping espresso martinis or discovering indie bookstores (or both!), we’re all about places that mix personality with practicality.
And this time, we’re heading a mere 15 miles north of Boston to a town that punches well above its weight class in charm, comfort, and killer breakfast sandwiches: welcome to Reading.
(Also, it’s RED-ing, not REE-ding. Like many things in New England, it doesn’t quite follow the rules—but it has its own kind of charm.)
With its small-town heart and big-league location (hello, 93 and 95 access), Reading is one of those places that knows how to live well—and make it look easy. You’ll find tree-lined streets, a walkable town center, a commuter rail stop that actually makes commuting bearable, and some of the best hidden gems in dining, shopping, and everything in between.
Let’s take a stroll, shall we?

Clockwise from upper left: out front of the Professor's Market, ready for live music at Bunratty Tavern and a steaming dish of mussels next door, at The Charles.
A Food Scene That’s All Vibe (and Zero Pretense)
Reading may not be on the cover of Bon Appétit—but we’re pretty sure that’s only because no one from the editorial team has eaten here yet.
Start your day at Perfecto’s Caffé with a coffee that doesn’t disappoint and a breakfast sandwich that hits the spot. If you’re more of a bagel purist, you can head to the hot spot in town, Bagel World, but honestly, we’re all about House of Bagels—same menu and a shorter wait means you’re way less hangry. But if you’re playing favorites (and we are), the best breakfast sandwich? That honor goes to Professor’s Market. Get it hot, get a smoothie while you’re there, and thank us later.
When lunchtime calls, Half & Half is the spot. Think retro diner meets modern comfort—with pancakes that’ll ruin you for all others. It’s the kind of place where families, freelancers, and breakfast-for-lunch fans all feel at home.
Now, for dinner: if you’re in the mood for North End vibes without fighting for parking on Hanover Street, Zucca is your go-to. Tiny, intimate, and packed with flavor—you need a reservation, but you’ll leave full, happy, and maybe already planning your return. Fun fact: Zucca is run by the same owners as Half & Half, so you know they know what they’re doing.
Feeling fancy? Head to Post 1917, Reading’s answer to a downtown steakhouse tucked inside the old post office. The bar is massive, the outdoor space has live music in the summer, and the cocktails come with both craftsmanship and kick.
For the martini lovers (we see you), Venetian Moon has an entire menu devoted to them. Espresso martini? It’s their crown jewel.
And for those nights when you cannot cook one more thing, Bunratty Tavern has your back. This Irish pub is cozy, casual, and family-friendly, with comfort food classics like shepherd’s pie, fish & chips, and bangers & mash that hit the table hot and fast. The vibe is warm, the portions are generous, and the staff makes you feel like a regular, even on your first visit. Bonus: the patio’s perfect on summer nights, and there’s always a game on in the back to keep the kids entertained while you sneak in a well-earned pint.
Main Street, But Make It Boutique
Shopping in Reading feels like a choose-your-own-adventure through cozy storefronts and curated boutiques, and if you’re someone who values creating a signature look, you’ve hit the sartorial jackpot. Start at Aine’s Boutique for women’s fashion that strikes the perfect balance between style and comfort. Then wander to Goodhearts and Love Struck for adorable kiddo gear, or pop into Tin Bucket for handmade gifts and crafting classes that’ll awaken your inner DIY goddess.
Book lovers, don’t miss Whitelam Books—a true indie treasure that makes you want to buy everything and start a book club on the spot. (We’re not saying you have to grab a latte and read on the bench out front, but we’re not not saying it either.)
You’ll also find Marathon Sports, Dynamik Sports, and a surprisingly chic Paper Store with that newly-renovated glow. And yes, Jordan’s Furniture is technically in town, but locals count it as its own amusement park—because what other furniture store has a ropes course and a Cookie Monstah truck? Only in Reading.
Parks, Trails, and Neighborhood Sled Runs
One of Reading’s unsung superpowers? The unfettered abundance of green spaces. Playgrounds dot the neighborhoods and elementary schools, and winter turns local fields into family-friendly skating rinks. Want to sled like a local? Hit the hills at Barrows Elementary School or Parker Middle and prepare for the best kind of cardio for yourself, and one that will tucker out the kids in the best way possible.
The Town Forest offers trails for walkers, runners, and anyone who needs to remember what peace and quiet sounds like. And if you’re up for a quick drive, Lake Quannapowitt in neighboring Wakefield is a fan favorite for a long loop walk, dog spotting, and waterfront breeze.
Reading is a town where sidewalks matter—because people actually use them. Strollers, bikes, joggers, dogs—it’s all part of the daily rhythm.
Clockwise from upper left: the Bunratty Tavern, all dressed up for a private event, sailing (permitted on Lake Quannapowitt), the sidewalk style of The Charles and a classic - and convenient - broccoli and chicken pasta bake from The Professor's Market.
Real Estate Snapshot: The Good Life in Reach
Reading’s housing stock is as charming as it is varied—think classic colonials, capes, and updated contemporaries with ample space. Yards get used. Neighbors say hello. And you can still catch a house before the open house if you’ve got your ear to the ground.
Thanks to its commuter-friendly location and community-first vibe, Reading remains one of the towns north of Boston that keep popping up on “we could totally live here” lists—and for good reason.
A Day (or a Life) in Reading
Whether you're swinging through for ice cream and a sidewalk stroll, scoping out schools and trails, or just exploring a town where small businesses thrive and community matters, Reading makes a strong case for staying a little longer.
And if you find yourself grabbing dinner reservations, a gift for a friend, and looking up open houses all in the same day? Yeah… we’ve been there.
