A Summer Day Trip That Might Win Your Heart

Here at 4Squares, we love a good day trip—and we’re always on the lookout for hidden gems across Massachusetts. From urban adventures to suburban strolls to the quiet magic of tiny towns, we’re here for all of it.

And this month, we’re traveling northbound to one of our favorite small towns: Georgetown. About 35 minutes north of Medford on I-95, Georgetown is a place where tree-lined streets, historic homes, and wide-open spaces invite you to slow down, take a deep breath, and then…exhale. With its semi-rural vibe and a balance of peaceful living and modern convenience, this quintessential New England town offers the kind of charm that makes you want to linger a little longer.

Whether you’re in the mood to explore, breathe in some fresh air, or casually peek at real estate (we see you), Georgetown’s got something to offer.

A Small Town With Real Presence

Georgetown might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think “North Shore day trip,”—but that’s exactly the point. It flies quietly under the radar, and its timeless quiet becomes a kind of magic.

The town center feels like it was plucked straight from a New England summer postcard. Picture locally owned shops with striped awnings, front porches dressed in red, white, and blue bunting, and a town green made for barefoot kids and lawn chairs at dusk. American flags flutter in the breeze, and the scent of fresh-cut grass and charcoal hangs in the air. Whether you’re wandering a shady trail or grabbing a slice and an ice cream cone, there’s something sweet and grounding about being here.

Real Estate Snapshot

If your version of the good life includes a little more space, a lot more trees, and the chance to wave to your neighbors by name, Georgetown is the town you’ve been looking for.

Homes here are mostly single-family, set on generous lots where kids can run and leaves actually get raked. You’ll find a charming mix of antique colonials, classic New England capes, and newer builds that still fit the character of the town. Inventory tends to move quickly, especially in summer, when everything looks like a postcard.

Like much of Massachusetts, real estate pricing comes at a range depending on what you’re seeking. But when you find the right one, it’s more than a house—it’s a home.

While the town leans quiet on the arts scene, that’s part of its slower rhythm. Expect library-hosted exhibits, the occasional community concert, and seasonal events at the First Congregational Church or Perley School. Georgetown isn’t a nightlife town—it’s a “let’s watch the sunset and sip lemonade” kind of place. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.

What to Do in Summer (aka Georgetown at Its Finest)

Georgetown is one of those towns that knows how to do summer right—quiet mornings, wide-open skies, and the kind of charm that sneaks up on you. And if you only have a day, make it count with a visit to two local gems that capture the season’s magic.

Start at Nunan Florist & Greenhouse, a beloved staple that’s bursting with color this time of year. Sun-loving blooms spill from every pot, porch swings sway gently in the breeze, and the air smells like fresh soil and possibility. Whether you’re browsing garden décor, selecting plants, or simply taking in the scenery, this place makes slowing down feel effortless.

Then head next door to Café Sarina, where summer mornings begin with maple lattes, iced teas, and breakfast sandwiches made with love. The patio’s a perfect perch for people-watching (and flower-gazing), and if you’re feeling playful, there’s a beautifully landscaped mini golf course just steps away. These two spots are Georgetown’s answer to summer bliss—easygoing, welcoming, and worth every minute.

Once Your Belly Is Full and You're Caffeinated…

Georgetown invites you to linger a little longer. This is where you slow down. Take in the greenery. Wander the sidewalks. And discover a few more small-town gems.

Feeling like stretching out? Head to Georgetown–Rowley State Forest for an easy hike under a canopy of amber and gold. Or circle Rock Pond, where the morning light makes everything look a little more magical.

Is retail therapy more your style? Then take a stroll through The Shops at Auburn Landing, where you’ll find a curated mix of artisan goods, vintage treasures, and locally made gifts that are anything but ordinary. Then pop into The Scala Center just down the road—three floors of creativity, wellness, and one-of-a-kind jewelry by Lisa Scala that’s inspired by the natural world you’re walking through.

Before heading home, swing by Crosby’s Marketplace to grab those cider donuts (we weren’t kidding about getting extras). And if you’ve still got time to spare, check out one of the local pumpkin patches or a nearby corn maze—because fall only comes once a year, and Georgetown makes it count.

Whether you’re deep in summer day trip mode, simply looking for a change of scenery, or quietly scouting new places to explore, Georgetown is exactly the kind of town that can quickly become a beloved tradition. It’s easy to reach, easy to enjoy, and full of that charming New England spirit.
